  • Finding acceptable alternatives to the prescriptive fire regulations and codes
  • Guiding owners/managers/designers of buildings, especially residential and commercial, on how to satisfy the fire regulations
  • On behalf local authorities, approving fire safety aspects of complex fire safety engineered buildings
  • Undertaking fire risk assessments
  • Observing and auditing British and international fire tests
  • Specifying passive fire precautions (structural fire precautions and means of escape)
  • Specifying methods for upgrading fire resistance of buildings, especially historic buildings
  • Identifying inadequacies in installed passive fire protection systems in buildings and proposing remedial measures
  • Achieving fire resistance in lightweight building components
  • Making informed Trade-off of active and passive fire protection methods
  • Publishing BRE guidance on fire engineering design of tall fire walls
  • Investigating thermal bowing and how it affects building design and publishing BRE design guidance
  • Conducting BRE research into fire severity in enclosures and commenting on the time-equivalent method
  • Arranging large scale fire tests at BRE for European harmonization of fire resistance furnaces
  • Researching new methods of fire protecting steel work and predicting the behaviour of steel and composite structures
