A
note on My Fire Safety Publications
Many of the author’s publications
have been reproduced in full below with the kind permission of the publisher.
These have been reproduced, mostly by scanning. The most recent publications appear
at the top of the list in each category. They may be of interest and use to students
and experienced practitioners alike. The principles and practice of fire
precautions and means of escape illustrated in the publications remain valid even
though some were published as long ago as the 1970’s. The reader should be aware,
therefore, that regulations and codes cited may no longer be current and their
currency and relevance should be checked. It is hoped that these publications
will contribute towards an understanding of fire safety engineering. The articles
taken from the Architects Journal and Specification which appear
in the 'Fire protection methods' and Fire protection problems' categories (see
below) give an introduction to the subject of buildings and fire and cover a wide
range of topics not found elsewhere.
There are specialist comprehensive
articles on fire behaviour of sandwich panels with practical solutions to the
problems illustrated and these are taken from Fire Engineers Journal. Again
the work on fire engineering of tall fire walls published in Fire Surveyor
in 1987 is useful and interesting.
Many other topics are covered such
as: design fires for sandwich panels; means of escape; smoke control methods;
fire severity; fire testing; new methods of fire protection for structural steelwork;
performance of concrete and brickwork in fire; the Fire Precautions Act 1971 (now
replaced by the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order) ; the development of the
first British Standard code of practice on fire safety engineering (DD 240); assessment
of the Structural Eurocode on fire actions; upgrading the structural fire precautions
of historic buildings; and resistance of tall buildings to large aircraft impact
and fire.
Specialist publications cover the use of plate thermometers
in fire resistance testing, severity of fire in large compartments, thermal bowing
of construction elements and the novel development of an electric cooking hob
which will not cause chip-pan fires. There are several BRE Client Reports
listed which contain experimental data useful for calibrating theoretical models
of structural behaviour, but these are classified as confidential by BRE. In determined
cases it is possible to obtain permission to gain access to the data on application
to BRE.
For reasons of confidentiality it has not been possible to reproduce
commercial contract research publications.
